What is LAPI®?

LAPI® is an invasive laser therapy methodology developed for advanced physiotherapy. It combines ultrasound-guided percutaneous access with an optical fibre that delivers photobiomodulation directly into or close to the selected tissue. This approach, defined as intratissular photobiomodulation, allows the clinician to bring photonic energy closer to the therapeutic target while integrating the procedure into a structured rehabilitation pathway.

FAQ

How is LAPI® different from traditional laser therapy?

Traditional laser therapy delivers light through the skin. LAPI® uses a percutaneous optical fibre to bring photobiomodulatory energy closer to the selected tissue. This changes the way laser energy can be delivered and controlled within an advanced physiotherapy procedure. 

How is LAPI® different from dry needling or percutaneous electrolysis?

The main difference is the therapeutic stimulus. Dry needling primarily uses a mechanical stimulus, while percutaneous electrolysis uses electrical current. LAPI® uses photonic energy and photobiomodulation delivered through an optical fibre. These techniques therefore have different mechanisms and should not be considered interchangeable. 

Is LAPI® performed under ultrasound guidance?

Yes. Ultrasound guidance is a fundamental part of the LAPI® methodology. It allows the physiotherapist to identify the target tissue, guide the procedure accurately and monitor the position of the needle and optical fibre during treatment.

Is invasive laser therapy safe?

Safety depends on appropriate professional training, correct patient selection, ultrasound guidance, suitable equipment and rigorous procedural protocols. For this reason, LAPI Academy places particular emphasis on anatomy, ultrasound, asepsis, technique and clinical decision-making before professionals begin applying the methodology. 

What asepsis procedures are required for LAPI®?

Because LAPI® is a percutaneous technique, asepsis is an essential component of the procedure. LAPI Academy training includes specific protocols for preparation of the treatment area, sterile materials, handling of needles and fibres, and management of the clinical environment according to the type of procedure being performed.

Who can train in the LAPI® methodology?

LAPI Academy is primarily designed for qualified physiotherapists with an interest or experience in invasive physiotherapy, musculoskeletal rehabilitation and ultrasound-guided techniques. Entry requirements may vary depending on the course level and the professional regulations of each country. 

Do I need previous experience in invasive physiotherapy?

Previous experience is strongly recommended for advanced LAPI® training. Working safely with percutaneous techniques requires a solid understanding of anatomy, ultrasound and invasive procedures. LAPI Academy therefore provides a structured educational pathway according to the professional's existing level of experience. 

Why is specific LAPI® training required?

LAPI® is not simply the use of a laser device with a needle.
